Florida State is the best basketball school in the ACC

(Originally posted on

This may come as a surprise to many, but Florida State is currently the best basketball school in the ACC.

Number 1.

Not Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland, etc, etc.

Florida State.

As of February 22, Florida State basketball teams have a combined in-conference record of 19-5 (11-1 for the ladies, 8-4 for the men). North Carolina is a game behind with 18-6, and Duke is third at 17-7.

I have no idea when the last time a school not named Duke or UNC has ruled the ACC, but I would guess it doesn’t happen very often.

Granted, the Blue Devils and the Tarheels have better combined total records (47-7 for UNC, 44-9 for Duke) than FSU’s 44-11. But what counts is the in-conference play. And there is no school better.

Let me say it one more time:

Florida State University is the best basketball school in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

On a related note, earlier this season I said the men’s basketball team needed 22 wins to ensure themselves an NCAA Tournament bid.  Despite their big wins, ACC record, and quality play throughout the season, I still believe they need at least one more win. The Noles currently have 21 wins with 4 games left, 2 at home and 2 on the road.

Up next: at Boston College (19-9, 7-6 in conference), vs. Clemson (22-4, 8-4 in conf.), at Duke (22-5, 8-4 in conf.), and vs. Virginia Tech (16-10, 6-6 in conf.).

One more win.

  1. I’m pulling for you guys to get the No. 2 spot ahead of Duke and Clemson in Mens. But hey, that No.1 spot isn’t too far out of the question if UNC keeps playing like they did against Maryland.

  2. Jacob, you do realize that number 1 spot would have been ours had Ty Lawson missed his buzzer beater, right?

It’s all going to boil down to the next four games. Four games for most of the marbles.

  3. Yes, you are correct. I stand corrected. But a fan can dream, right?

I think the ACC Tournament should be really interesting. Any one of the top 6-8 teams have all proven they can beat each other. It’s really anyone’s tournament. But it would real nice if FSU could finish second in the standings. All they need to do is beat Clemson at home and then Duke at Cameron, which they have done before.
